The first in what will be my ongoing series on Local Stores. Garden Grove in Huntersville. I found Garden Grove when made the switch to organic lawn and garden products. I shopped all the local box stores and I was not impressed with their selection of organic soils and fertilizers. Trying to get answers to specific questions about organics from the Big Boxes was even more challenging. Enter Garden Grove.
Just south of Sam Furr Road (Hwy 73) on Old Statesville Road in Huntersville is Garden Grove. You’ll find just about anything you need for your landscaping needs. Their staff is extremely friendly, and they have the local knowledge of conditions. When combined with the fact that they actually use the products they sell, the advice you get is typically spot on.
The Garden Grove Nursery is possibility one of the healthiest local nurseries. They have a wide variety of local plants, trees, and shrubs. They specialize in regional and local plants that thrive in the Lake Norman community. All nursery trees can usually be found in multiples sizes. They also have fountains and accessories. As with everything at Garden Grove, you can get professional delivery and / or installation.
The landscaping section of Garden Grove will take your landscaping to the next level. If you like to do it yourself, they have hardscape items in stock and ready to go. If they don’t have what you’re looking for they can always order it in for you. They also have design and installation if you’re looking for a professionally done job.
There is also the Garden Grove Garden Center. The Garden Center has more then I could possibly list. They have everything you need for your lawn. Including seed, fertilizers (including organic), and lime. If your flower beds need work, they have pine needles and many kinds of mulch. You can get mulch either bagged or bulk. Other items you can find in the Garden Center include, stone benches, boulders, bird baths, fountains and even gloves, hats and shoes.
I’ve personally used Garden Grove for many projects over the years and have always been happy afterward. Two experiences stand out to me.
The first is with my flower beds. I’ve purchased plants and shrubs from every big box store and nursery in Huntersville. I’ve killed more then my fair share, but very few of those have come from Garden Grove. Out of the survivors, I have two rhododendrons. One was here from the previous owner, the other I got from Garden Grove. Despite the fact that the Garden Grove plant is half the age of the other and started half the size, the Garden Grove plant is twice as large. They are in similar soil and light conditions.
The other is with my lawn. I’ve had bad issues with brown patch in the height of summer. It typically kills half my lawn by August. While following the advice of a now closed business, I had started using fungicides. This was used to combat the brown patch which is a fungus. The fungicides were expensive , doubling my yearly lawn budget. Yet after two years I was no better off. I’ve since changed lawn seed, changed mowing habits and stopped the fungicide. My lawn, while still needing work, looks better than ever!
After a business tells you not to buy something they have an easy opportunity to sell you. The advice they give to buy something carries a lot more weight. It’s not about buying something for buying sake. It’s about buying something you need, when you need it. For anyone in Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson, Concord or North Charlotte who has landscaping needs. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out Garden Grove.
